That Marble Boat has something to do with Pearl Harbor :

Your tour guide/host might have already told you that the Empress diverted China's Naval budget to built herself the Summer Palace with an artificial lake and the marble boat back in the 1800's.
A few year later, the Japanese Navy invaded China. While both countries had about same sized Navy with war ships built in Germany, the Chinese Navy had no money. Their sailors had not been paid for months and didn't even had enough food to eat. So the battle was one sided with the Chinese ship sitting at anchor (no fuel) and low on Armo. After loosing the war, China was forced to pay restitutions for Japan's military expenses plus very LARGE penalty (in tons of silver). Also the three eastern Provinces (near Korea) which were very rich in mineral and other natural resources were given to under Japanese control. The money paid was so huge that Japan was able to triple the size of its military forces and quickly built up it supporting heavy industry (with resources from those three Chinese Provinces) that some 60 years later, they were strong enough to attack PEARL HARBOR !!
